MONTECAMPIONE, Italy -- Fabio Aru of Italy claimed a solo victory on the tough uphill finish to Montecampione in the 15th stage of the Giro dItalia on Saturday for his first Grand Tour victory. Aru made his move with 2.5 kilometres (1.55 miles) remaining and finished 21 seconds ahead of Fabio Duarte. Nairo Quintana edged out Pierre Rolland for third place, 22 seconds behind. The 23-year-old Aru also cut into Rigoberto Urans overall lead and is now fourth -- 2 minutes, 24 seconds behind the Colombian. Uran extended his advantage over his closest challengers and is 1:03 ahead of Cadel Evans and 1:50 ahead of Rafal Majka. Victorias Ryder Hesjedal was ninth in Sundays leg, 1:13 behind Aru. Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., was 138th. Hesjedal, the winner of the 2012 Giro, is 11th overall, 6:44 behind Uran. Tuft is 166th. The previous two times a Giro stage has finished up Montecampione, the winner has gone on to claim the race. It was another stage dedicated to the late Marco Pantani, who had a memorable victory up to Montecampione on his way to winning the 1998 Giro. Pantani also went on to win the Tour de France that year. He was found dead in a hotel room on Valentines Day in 2004, and a coroner ruled he died from cocaine poisoning. The stage was mainly flat along the 225-kilometre (140-mile) route from Valdengo before the final long and steep climb. The break of the day was formed of 12 riders and it had 10 minutes with 78 kilometres (48.5 miles) remaining, before the peloton -- driven by Nero Sottoli -- started to reel them in. The escapees had an advantage of 2:24 at the base of the climb, where Australian Adam Hansen was the first to make a move. He was joined first by Andre Cardoso and then Fabio Felline and Rodolfo Torres, as Julian Arredondo attacked from the peloton. They had less than a minute lead with 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) remaining. Arredondo took over the lead with Cardoso but the duo were caught and immediately passed by Philip Deignan, who had a 20-second advantage with 5 kilometres (3 miles) remaining. Rolland attacked and caught up with Deignan and the pair had an advantage of 36 seconds before Aru made his move, bringing Uran with him. Quintana and Duarte also attacked and the quartet caught the leading duo. Aru then attacked again, chased by Duarte, Quintana and Rolland as Uran dropped off, after deciding he couldnt keep up with the pace. Monday sees the third and final rest day of this years Giro before arguably its toughest stage, with the iconic climbs up the Stelvio and Gabbia -- weather permitting. Ted Simmons Cardinals Jersey . Malkin practised with his teammates for the first time on Tuesday after missing almost all of training camp with an undisclosed issue.Whatever the problem is, its fading. The 2012 MVP looked like his typically powerful self while getting his first hands-on look at new coach Mike Johnstons system. It feels great, Malkin said. I need to get in better shape, but Im glad to be back.Malkin made it through the entire hour-long session working through a series of high intensity drills, including skating alongside Sidney Crosby as they worked two-on-two against a pair of defencemen. While hes not quite 100 per cent, Malkin impressed Johnston with his conditioning. He stayed the whole practice, that was really encouraging, Johnston said. I thought he looked pretty good for a guy who hasnt been on the ice for a month.Johnston cautioned he wants to see how Malkin responds on Wednesday before getting too optimistic about whether No. 71 will be available when the Penguins begin the long six-month slog through the regular season. Theres no need to rush him back out there, though the sooner Malkin returns, the sooner Johnston can begin the process of figuring out how to best use one of the leagues most dynamic players.Malkin lost longtime running mate James Neal when the Penguins traded the productive, if volatile, forward to Nashville in a trade on the opening night of the NHL Draft in June. Malkin, who had 23 ggoals and 49 assists while being limited to 60 regular games last year, called the decision to ship Neal a surprise but said he didnt spend too much time worrying about it.ddddddddddddIts hockey, Malkin said. The last four years is not good enough. We just change a little bit.Or perhaps a lot. Neals departure was part of a sizable off-season overhaul by one of the NHLs marquee franchises after the Penguins failed to reach the Stanley Cup Finals for the fifth straight season. Johnston replaced Dan Bylsma on the bench and is in the process of implementing a new system that places more emphasis on puck possession and support than the slightly more wide-open style favoured by Bylsma.Malkin has spent the early portions of the transition in the video room but is impressed by Johnston, who travelled to Russia over the summer shortly after getting hired. We talk a little bit, Malkin said. Good time with him. ... Im glad to see him, meet him and just move forward. That move could include the Penguins getting creative with how they use Malkin, at least early in the season. Johnston said the team will experiment with moving Malkin, a centre, to right wing and pairing him with Brandon Sutter and Pascal Dupuis. Johnston stressed the idea isnt something the Penguins are considering on a permanent basis but something hes considering while forward Beau Bennett recovers from a leg injury.I like the way Sutter is playing and it takes away some defensive responsibilities (for Malkin), Johnston said. Geno has played the wing. Hes a great centre. We can use him at centre, we know that. But to get him playing with the best people right now, were taking a look at wing. ' ' '
